Video showing addicts taking drugs in Srinagar goes viral

A video purportedly showing three persons taking drugs somewhere in Srinagar has gone viral on social media.

The video shows one of the three drug addicts lying on the floor of an unknown ground and one of the rolling something into a paper. The other person meanwhile injects something into the vein of another youth before injecting the chemical into his own veins.

Sources informed The Kashmiriyat that the video has been shot inside a hospital in Srinagar city.

The video has evoked sharp reactions from netizens who expressed concern over the growing drug addiction in the valley.

Kashmir has seen a 2000 per cent rise in drug abuse cases in last 5 years. Srinagar’s Government Medical College has seen a 2000 per cent hike in heroin abuse cases in the last five years.

In 2016, the Oral Substitution Therapy (OST) Centre at the Government Medical College in Srinagar reported 489 cases, In 2017 to 3,000, a growth of seven times than the previous year.. In 2019, the number climbed to 7,000 and crossed the 10,000 mark in 2021 with an overall 2,000% spike in the last five years.

Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh last month said a large number of youth are falling to the drugs and called for collective fight the “menace”.

Meanwhile the Jammu Kashmir taking congnizance of the video has taken the three to a de addiction centre in Srinagar.

“There is a viral video where 3 drug addicts are taking drugs in Noorbagh area. It came out during investigation that the 3 were experimenting with medicines provided by de-addiction centre by injecting into veins and not orally taking them. They are being sent de-addiction centre,” Police said in a statement.
