Viral video shows trooper assaulting civilians in Srinagar, evokes criticism

A video showing the Government Force personnel assaulting civilians has gone viral on social media.

In the video posted by JKNC spokesperson, Sara Hayat Shah, Army men can be seen rounding up a civilian on a busy street in Nowgam Srinagar Army and assaulting a civilian.

The video shows an argument taking place between a civilian and some army personnel. During the argument, another Army man carrying an assault rifle and a stick in his hand rushed to the spot. He, then, hit another civilian on his head from the back side.

The video has evoked widespread criticism from Twitter users.

“Such behaviour from Army is Highly unwarranted. @OfficeOfLGJandK @ChinarcorpsIA @adgpi @JmuKmrPolice. This needs your immediate attention,” Tanvir Sadiq, the spokesperson of Jammu Kashmir National Conference wrote.

Leader of National Conference, Salman Sagar denouncing the “highhandedness of Army” said, “Brutal human rights voilation happening every now & then yet everything is normal in their eyes. Feeling sad,how native citizens are treated inhumanly in their own Homeland, Sad state of affairs!”

Adil Lateef, another Twitter user wrote, “I don’t know why people are in disbelief and shock after watching this video. Is this something new in our part of the world? Or we were living in Disneyland before 2019?”

Meanwhile the Jammu Kashmir Police on Monday issued a press release stating that Police has registered a case for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint following an incident in which “some army personnel in uniform reportedly beat one civilian while other personnel present also got involved in minor fight” at Nowgam Chowk Srinagar.”

Police has taken cognizance of the incident and registered a case under FIR number 116/2022 and initiated an investigation, the press release said.

Meanwhile the Indian Army has said that the video has been posted to “tarnish” the image of Indian Army. “A video has gone viral on social media showing altercation between IA and civilians. #ChinarCorps is checking the veracity of the video. Prima facie it appears to be an old video, deliberately posted to tarnish the image of Armed Forces,” the Army said.
