The Young Lawyers Forum, Kashmir (YLF, Kashmir) conducted a virtual workshop on 10th February titled ‘Socio-Legal aspects of acid attacks’ for spreading legal awareness regarding the subject.

The workshop was attended by 200 participants belonging to the legal fraternity, including lawyers and law students. The guest speakers for the event were Mr Mohammad Shafi Khan (Retd. Principal District and Sessions Judge), Advocate Abdul Aziz Teli and a practising clinical psychologist Mr Waseem Ahmad Kakroo, who apprised the participants about the relevant legal and psychological aspects of such cases.

Mr Shafi Khan, who has previously convicted the accused in the Chanapora acid attack case during his tenure as the Principal District & Sessions Judge Srinagar, while talking about the challenges that the legal system faces in such cases, said that the nature and depth of investigation in these cases is the primary factor that determines the course of the trial process in Courts. He also remarked that such offences do not bring shame to the victim but the offender himself and added that society needs to be more accepting towards the victims of such heinous offences.

Mr Khan strongly emphasized the need for strengthening the value system in our community for the prevention of such events in the future.

Mr Teli, while highlighting the aspect of trials and challenges faced in such matters while securing a conviction, pointed out the loopholes where the justice delivery system needs improvement at large. He also discussed the need for rehabilitation of victims and stronger deterrent punishment for offenders in such cases. He impressed that such offenders must be given life imprisonment sentences, as against the present legal scenario. It is important to note that Mr Teli has served as the Special Public Prosecutor in J&K and has been a key figure in securing convictions in several noted cases such as the infamous Romana hit-and-run case and the Chanapora Acid attack case.

Mr Waseem Kakroo, while stressing upon the need to focus on the root causes of such events occurring on a repeated basis, said that it is essential to get rid of radical patriarchy and update upbringing design for both genders in our society. He also emphasized the need for seeking psychological assistance for both the accused and the victim for rehabilitation. Further, he called upon the families to play their part in shaping emotionally balanced individuals.

The session was closed with concluding remarks presented by the Head, Working group on legal awareness of YLF and a vote of thanks given by the President of the organisation who also affirmed to carry out similar events in the future for awareness of public at large.
