Longest Gunfight in Kashmir in Many Years- No Militant Body Found in Kupwara, One More Trooper Succumbs

Amid reports that one Militant has been killed in the Kupwara Encounter, the Police officials conducting a joint operation with Indian Army and CRPF said that no Militant body has been found at the site of the encounter.

On Friday afternoon, the Government Forces including RR of Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu Kashmir Police laid a siege around Babagund, Langate area of Handwara in Kupwara District.

As the forces were conducting search operation, after receiving inputs about Militant movement, the holed up Militant opened fire upon forces around 1230 am on Friday.

Around, 9 am on Friday, the forces claimed to have killed two Militants in the operation.

However, when they were conducting search operations in the area, the Militants fired from the rubble, killing at least four troopers and injuring five others.

On Sunday morning, one more injured trooper succumbed to his injuries.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that the residents of nearby areas have been all sealed inside a house and their movement has been restricted.

They said that residents are being used as Human shields to search Militant bodies after four troopers were killed during search of the damaged houses.

At least three houses have been damaged as forces blasted these houses, Locals told The Kashmiriyat.

One Saturday evening, the forces again claimed to have killed a Militant, but on Sunday morning, they said no dead body has been recovered.

A police officer told The Kashmiriyat that the operation was still continuing and further details would be shared only when it concludes. He confirmed that no militant’s body had been recovered so far.

Pertinently, this encounter that raged on Friday wee hours is the longest encounter in the past many years.

Earlier on 10 December, 2016, Majid Zargar and his affiliate engaged the Forces for more than 60 hours in a gunfight in Arwani area of South Kashmir.
