12 years on, water supply scheme in Bandipora awaits completion

After 12 years, an ambitious water supply scheme (WSS) in Ashtangoo is yet to be completed forcing people to collect muddy water from a nearby stream.

An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the construction of the water supply scheme in Ashtangoo was started in 2010 by Jal Shakti division Bandipora but the scheme is yet to be completed.

Not divulging reasons for the delay in getting the project completed, he said that people in the area are facing immense hardships due to the acute shortage of water supply all these days.

“We are being forced to fetch water from far away streams and lakes which carry dangerous water-borne diseases among residents, particularly children,” locals said, adding that they have informed the concerned officials about sufferings many times but they have not been able to do anything for us.

Mudasir Ahmad, a local said that the scheme was to benefit around 600 households of the villages including Badiyara, Kanbethi, Ghat, and Ashtangoo but the villagers have been left high and dry as the scheme is yet to be completed.

Shakeela, a woman, said that the government has always made false promises to them.

Meanwhile, the locals appealed to the concerned authorities to pay attention to the area and restore the water supply without further delay—(KNO)
