The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has confirmed the safe evacuation of more than 190 Kashmiri students from Iran amid ongoing regional tensions.
The evacuation was carried out in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Tehran.
Following the reopening of Iranian airspace on 20 June 2025, a significant breakthrough was achieved under Operation Sindhu. A chartered Mahan Air flight successfully transported 290 Indian nationals from Mashhad to New Delhi late Friday night. Among those on board were over 190 Kashmiri students who had been stranded due to the recent conflict.
AIMSA J\&K Vice President, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, personally received the students at Delhi Airport and supervised their onward travel. The group departed for Srinagar at 2:00 AM and is expected to arrive in the Valley by this afternoon. Two more chartered flights are scheduled to evacuate the remaining students from Mashhad over the next two days.
The current status of students from other universities is as follows:
Tehran University of Medical Sciences: Evacuation is expected to begin today after students were successfully relocated to northern Iran.
Kerman and Golestan Universities: Students are being moved to Mashhad today in coordination with the Embassy and university officials.
Kish Island (TUMS Campus): AIMSA has requested the MEA and the Indian Embassy to expedite the evacuation process, keeping in view the sensitive situation and the island’s isolation from the mainland.
Shiraz, Isfahan, and Ahvaz Universities: Students are en route to Mashhad from Yazd and have been confirmed safe.
On the night of 20 June, AIMSA received a number of distress calls from the families of students in Mashhad following unverified reports of an attack. After verifying with credible sources, AIMSA confirms that there was no direct attack on Mashhad. Only aerial interceptions took place near the city, and the students remain safe under the supervision of Embassy officials. Families are urged to remain calm and assured.
AIMSA continues to support over 1,000 Indian students currently in Iran and remains in close contact with more than 1,800 family members. The organisation has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every student is safely brought back.
AIMSA has also extended its appreciation to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran for their relentless efforts during this time of crisis.
