Police in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have detained 20 individuals allegedly involved in harassing tourists and young couples at popular recreational spots, including Abdullah Park and Dumping Park.

The group, locally known as the “Self Made Gang (16/96)”, was reportedly capturing photos and videos of tourists and couples without consent and later using them to intimidate or blackmail the victims.

“During the investigation, it was found that the gang was operating organized social media groups on WhatsApp and other platforms to coordinate such unlawful activities,” a police spokesperson said.

Acting swiftly, Ganderbal Police identified and apprehended all 20 accused. Their parents and guardians were called to the police station for counseling sessions, aimed at curbing such behavior in the future.

“While most of the youths were counseled and released, some habitual offenders involved in repeated acts of harassment have been booked under relevant sections of law and sent to Dignibal Jail,” the spokesperson added.

Police have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any incidents of harassment or suspicious behavior immediately. “We are committed to maintaining a safe and tourist-friendly environment in Ganderbal,” the official said.

For assistance, Ganderbal Police have issued dedicated helpline numbers — Women’s Helpline: 9541786742, PCR Ganderbal: 9906668731 / 01942416564.
