“124 locals joined militancy in 2017”

March 30 Despite Indian government’s multi pronged strategy in Kashmir to keep youth away from militancy, at least 27 of them have joined different militant outfits in the first three months of this year, police officials said. Locals joining militancy remains a major challenge for the government, even as it talks about involving Kashmiri youth in development activities so as to keep them away from militancy. According to police records, on an average, one boy joined militant ranks every three days in 2017. The trend looks similar so far this year as well. “Many more youth are missing from different villages. So, the number can increase,” a senior police official said. Hizb OGW Arrested in Ganderbal

March 30 The Jammu Kashmir police on Friday claimed they have arrested an over ground worker (OGW) affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant outfit. Police in a press briefing said that police acting on a specific information launched cordon and search operation at Lobar Mohalla Pati-Shalabug Ganderbal. During the search operation Police arrested one OGW namely Nazir Ahmad Malik son of Abdul Khaliq Malik of Lobar Mohalla Shallbug Ganderbal affiliated with HM Militant outfit. Police claimed that Nazir was  over ground worker of HM and involved in providing support to HM outfit and huge quantity of incriminating material was recovered from his possession. A case has been registered in Police Station Ganderbal .

Killed Cop was Poor, Lived in a Shed

March 30 Mushtaq Ahmed Sheikh Son of Late Sanaullah Sheikh, a resident of Katoo area in South Kashmir's Bijbehara Locality was shot dead by Unidentified Gunmen in late hours of Thursday. Residents said that around 8 pm, three masked men entered into the Shed Mushtaq resided in and shot him dead. Riyaz Ahmed, a cousin and neighbour of Muhstaq told The Kashmiriyat that the wife of Mushtaq pleaded before the gunmen to not kill them and after around 10 Minutes, we heard firing." His wife was also injured in the attack, She has received a bullet injury in her abdominal area and one on the chest. Mushtaq Lived in a make shift shed in the Katoo village for the past three years. As Per the Locals, the deceased cop was humble and kind to all the people.

“Hurriyat Leaders Free to go Anywhere”

March 30 The Chief of Jammu Kashmir Police on the crucial day of Friday has said that Hurriyat leaders are free to go anywhere they want. "They have been released from detention, but they will be responsible for any Law and order situation and their actions," he told. Hurriyat leaders have been imprisoned from past few years and their political activities have been barred. In what is believed to be an expected move, the government as per a leading Newspaper of Srinagar will watch how its decision to free the leadership will impact the feeling of anger and resentment in the Kashmir valley. Pertinently there has been a drastic rise in the number of Youth joining Militancy in the past few weeks.

March 30 Centre’s special representative for a dialogue on Kashmir Dineshwar Sharma visited militant hotbed Tral town in south Kashmir on Thursday. He met six delegations, including some sports enthusiasts and members of Sikh community. Tral town observed partial shutdown after the news of Sharma’s arrival spread . Tral is the native town of Burhan Wani, who was killed in 2016 and Zakir Musa, an active militant commander. Most of the legislators and ministers refrain from going to Tral, which is considered to be the stronghold of Jaish-e-Muhammad. Sharma came in an Army helicopter and met delegations at the town hall. Army Huts Set Ablaze in Shopian

March 30 Unknown persons on Thursday night set ablaze several seasonal huts belong to army at Doubjan area along the Mughal road in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Official sources said that the unknown persons suspected to be militants set on fire three to five seasonal huts of army’s 44 RR at Doubjan area. A police officer said that a report has been received about a fire incident in the area and immediately fire tenders were rushed to the site to douse off the flames. Asked about reports of seasonal huts gutted in the fire, the officer said that police are verifying the details. The seasonal huts are being used by the army during summer (April to November), sources said.

The situation in the volatile district of South Kashmir’s Shopian remained tense after two more bodies were recovered on Monday morning, raising the death toll in last night’s firing incident to six. “Two more bodies were recovered in Shopian district this morning,” a police spokesperson said.
