Exchange of Fire Between Militants and Forces in Baramulla Area

January 23 An exchange of gunfire between militants and government forces took place in Binner area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Wednesday afternoon. An officer confirmed that the exchange of gunfire has erupted after holed up militants fired upon the searching party of forces in the area. Earlier CASO was launched in the area after receiving inputs of militants presence in the area. The operation is being jointly conducted by a team of 46 RR, Jammu Kashmir Police and 53 BN of CRPF.

Intense Clashes Erupt After Militant Funeral in Shopian

January 23 Intense clashes have erupted in Shopian's Chillipora area on Wednesday afternoon after Shoaib Ahmed Shah, a militant from nearby Shermal area was laid to rest. Locals from Chillipora told The Kashmiriyat that after the funeral prayers of Shoaib in Shermal, hundreds of youth raising slogans tried to march towards the funeral of Shams who lives in the nearby Dragad area. ‘Hindu Woman- Muslim Man’ Marriage is Invalid- but child born is legitimate: SC

January 23 marriage of a Hindu woman with a Muslim man is not a “regular or valid” but the child born out of such wedlock is legitimate, the Supreme Court on Tuesday held. It also said that the legal effect of such an irregular marriage is that a wife is entitled to get dower but cannot inherit the husband’s property. The court held that the child born in an irregular marriage is legitimate just like in the case of a valid marriage and is entitled to inherit the property of the father. Budgam Residents Protest Against Frequent Power Cuts

January 23 Sajad Hameed The residents of several areas in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the Power Development Department. Residents of Rai pora and its adjoining areas protesting against frequent power shutdowns in the area blocked the main road connecting to Budgam town. The residents said that unscheduled power cuts and frequent power outages have made their life miserable. They asked the higher officials to look into the matter.

Shutdown and a Day of Funerals in Shopian, Pulwama

January 23 The Pulwama and Shopian Districts of Southern part has shut down to mourn the Killing of six Militants during two separate encounter with Government Forces. The Pulwama, Shopian districts have shut spontaneously as the news of the killings spread in the area on Tuesday. The Kashmiriyat was informed that traffic is off the roads, while business establishments are shut in the area on Wednesday for the second consecutive day. The authorities have also suspended classwork in educational institutes. Thousands of people have gathered for the funerals of Slain Militants and civilians in the Pulwama and Shopian Districts of South Kashmir. Jawahar Tunnel Yet to be Cleared, Highway Remains Shut for Third Consecutive Day

January 23 The highway connecting Jammu with Srinagar has been shut for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. The highway was shut after an avalanche hit the Jawahar Tunnel, a traffic official said. No vehicular movement would be allowed on the highway keeping the safety of travellers in mind, the senior traffic department official told IANS. He said that the Jawahar Tunnel is yet to be cleared from the Qazigund side. "The avalanche debris clearance operation will be started as soon as the weather improves, hopefully by today," he said. "Till that time, no vehicular movement will be allowed."

Another Avalanche Hits Kashmir- 2 Including Minor Girl Killed, 2 Injured

January 23 Two persons, including a minor girl, were killed and two others went missing after a snow avalanche hit Trigam area of Ramban district on Tuesday. According to official sources, a snow avalanche hit Kawana area near Trigam village at 3 pm on Tuesday, resulting into death of 25-year-old Muhammad Rafiq, son of Ghulam Qadir, and 12-year-old Sumerna, daughter of Mukhtiar Ahmed. Fatha Begum (30) and Taja Begum (32) went missing after the incident. They said the avalanche hit the village when the victims were returning to their house at Trigam, located about 50 km from Ramban in Khardi tehsil. “We have pressed our teams to rescue the missing persons,” said Showkat Aijaz, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, who has also sanctioned ex gratia for the next of kin of the deceased. ...

January 23 Thousands of people on Wednesday morning gathered in Dragad for the funeral of slain Shams ul Haq who was killed in an encounter on Tuesday in Shopian district. Eyewitnesses told The Kashmiriyat that women and men in large numbers have gathered at his native village where multiple rounds of funeral prayers have been offered so far. They said that the streets are witnessing huge rush and chaos as people are rushing from one funeral to the other. Five other Militants from Pulwama and Shopian district were killed during two separate encounters in Shopian's Shermal and Budgam's Charar e Sharif.

Forces Allegedly Torched Bikes, Smashed Cars of Relatives of Slain Militants As they Go to Collect Dead Bodies

January 22 The Government Forces have set ablaze two bikes and smashed the windows of two cars who had gone to collect the body of a Militant slain in Shopian encounter. Locals from Dragad told The Kashmiriyat that the relatives of Shams ul Haq from Dragad Shopian had gone to District Police Lines in Shopian to collect his dead body for last rites during which their vehicles were burnt and smashed by the Forces. They said that as soon as the relatives tried to step in, the forces set their vehicles ablaze and also smashed three cars causing huge damage to them. Almond Production Dips Rapidly in Kashmir as People Prefer Growing Apples

January 22 The production of almonds is decreasing at an alarming rate as large number of people prefer to grow apples over almonds. The farmers are every year converting more and more land into apple orchards. In many areas farmers are cutting almond trees to start apple cultivation. Hundreds of canals of land have been cleared off from almond tress in Renzipora, Koil, Chandgam, Payar, Lajoora, Wasoora,Yader, Malangpora areas of Pulwama.
