Encounter Rages in Handwara Kashmir- Second of the Day

A Gunfight has raged between militants and government forces in Ganipora area of Kralgund in Handwara of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday night. Sources said a joint team of Army’s RR, Police and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Ganipora area of Handwara on Wednesday late evening. As the joint team encircled the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them. The fire was retaliated by the joint team, triggering off an encounter. A senior police officer upon being contacted by The Kashmiriyat said that the exchange of fire between the joint team and the militants. As per the sources, two to three militants are believed to be trapped.

A 20-year-old boy has been found dead on Wednesday afternoon near the bus stand in Handwara area of frontier Kupwara district. Reports reaching The Kashmiriyat said that a youth from Argama Mawer was found dead under mysterious conditions in Handwara. The cause of the death was not immediately known, however initial reports suggest that the death might be a result of drug overdose. A Police team has rushed to spot and is investigating the matter.

PDD Worker Dies of Electric Shock in Srinagar

Mir Junaid   An employee of the Power Development Department (PDD) died of an electric shock at Brain area of Nishat, Srinagar. Sources told The Kashmiriyat that Ghulan Nabi Dar, a PDD employee received an electric shock while repairing an electric HT line. A resident of Brein area in Nishat, Dar fell down the electric pole and the locals rushed to his rescue. He was shifted to SKIMS - Soura hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

One Militant Killed in Ongoing Shopian Encounter

Mir Irfan One Militant has been killed during an encounter that broke out between government forces and militants at Moolu in Chitragam area of Shopian district on Wednesday afternoon. A Police official told The Kashmiriyat that a cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in the area by joint team of forces including 44 RR of Indian Army, CRPF and SOG of Jammu Kashmir Police Police on specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area. An official said that, after trapping the militants, they were asked to surrender, however, opened fire, which was retaliated, thus triggering an encounter. Sources said that two to three militants are believed to be trapped, while one of them has been killed so far. Internet services are likely to be barred in the district.

A 20-year-old labourer drowned in river Jhelum while he was extracting sand in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday morning. Kashmir News Observer, a local news gathering agency reported that Irshad Ahmad Sheikh, son of Bashir Ahmad Sheikh of Larow Kakapora slipped and fell into the river when he was extracting sand along with other persons in Pulwama. Covid 19- 102 Inmates Tested Positive in Central Jail Srinagar

Amid a massive surge in the coronavirus cases worldwide, the overcrowded jails of Jammu Kashmir are becoming hotpots of COVID-19. Officials from Central Jail in Srinagar told The Kashmiriyat that 102 inmates have tested positive, which includes six Jail staff and three female inmates. The COVID positive inmates have been kept in separate cells inside the Jail. According to the jail officials, as many as 450 samples have been taken for testing out of which 102 including three female inmates tested positive for the novel Coronavirus infection.
