Afghanistan flooding: At Least 100 dead, hundreds of homes destroyed

At least 100 people have died due to heavy flooding in northern and eastern regions of Afghanistan that severely damaged large parts of Charikar city, the capital of Parwan province, officials reported. The Ministry of Disaster Management in a statement said that several children were among the dead in Charikar city, which was overnight hit by heavy rains. On Wednesday, spokeswoman for Afghanistan’s Parwan province, Wahida Shahkar, said the total tally of casualties might increase as rescue teams work to find people buried under destroyed houses. Shahkar also stated that controlling the incident and helping the victims affected by the flooding was beyond the scope of the local government, and that the central government should step in swiftly. A 50-year-old woman was critically injured on Thursday after being shot shot at by her husband in a fit of rage over some issue in Shokbaba village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. An official said that a retired army captain, identified as Gulam Rasool Khan shot at his wife identified as Fatima Begum (50) with a 12 bore gun in Shokbaba village at around 03: 45AM. Following the incident Fatima suffered critical head injuries and was shifted to the district hospital Bandipora, he said. After initial treatment, she was referred to the SMHS Hospital Srinagar for specialised treatment and her condition was stated to be critical, the official said. The Police claimed that they recovered a pistol magazine along with 12 rounds of AK-47 from their possession. A police officer said that a cordon-and-search operation was launched in the Barthana area of Srinagar during which the house of Tariq Ahmad Hajam, who is a land broker by profession was raided. During the searches, the police officer claimed that a pistol magazine and 12 rounds of AK-47 were recovered from the house.
