Case Registered against Kupwara Man Under ‘Triple Talaq’ Law

A case has been registered against a man in north Kashmir district of Kupwara under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act-2019, which prohibits divorce by pronouncing talaq three times by husbands of married Muslim women. The case was registered after the woman, identified as Tahira Begum, approached a local court and sought FIR against her husband Rafaqat Ahmad Lone, a resident of Mundya Nagam, Keran in Kupwara. This is the first case registered in Kashmir valley under the act that was passed by Parliament in 2019. The Act makes all declaration of talaq, including in written or electronic form, to be void (i.e. not enforceable in law) and illegal.
