Former Army chief Gen Shankar Roy Chowdhury said the government needs to step up outreach in Kashmir and reassure people there that India will continue to be a secular democracy as the Taliban victory in Afghanistan is likely to see a renewed offensive by Pakistan-based militants. The Jammu Kashmir Police on Saturday has identified the second JeM militant who was killed along with two others in the upper reaches of Tral woods in South Kashmir's Awantipora. A top police officer said that besides Wakeel Shah, the second slain militant has been identified as Abdul Hameed Chopan(51). The officer further said that Hameed's son was also a militant who was killed in 2017 in an encounter. His name was Adil Ahmad Chopan and was associated with Hizb. Jammu Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested a man in an “extortion” case and recovered “one lakh rupees” from his possession. The man Ashiq Mir, according to Kashmir Age report, is one of the associates of Imran Ahmad Ganai (Shahid Imran), running a social media page –Kashmir Crown—in connection with the case of exhortation. The report quoting officials said that a case under IPC sections of 384 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) was registered in Baramulla against Ashiq Mir.
