Mercury plunges as ‘Chillai Kalan’ near end In Kashmir; Minus 11.8°C In Pahalgam

With ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day long harshest period of winter ending in couple of days, the minimum temperature plunged across Kashmir Valley as the world famous Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 11.8°C on Friday. An official of the meteorological department here told GNS that Srinagar, the summer capital of the J&K recorded a low of minus 3.6°C against last night’s minus 1.3°C. Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan’, which started from December 21. Its exit does not mean end of the cold. Danishwar Hameed Joint Forces launched a massive cordon and search operation (CASO) in two villages of the Kulgam district in south Kashmir. An official said that the operation on Friday was launched jointly by forces including RR of Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police, and CRPF following inputs about the movement of militants in the Kakran Pombay and Katrasoo areas of Kulgam. He said that the operation was launched following inputs about the presence of militants in these areas. The search operations in both areas were going on when this report was being filed.

After giving them ten days to respond, the High Court of Jammu Kashmir has granted two more weeks to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Government of India (GoI) to respond to a plea by Mohammed Lateef Magray seeking the dead body of his son Amir- one of the four persons killed on November 15 last year in Hyderpora. Earlier on January 12, the court had issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI, and J&K administration, Director General of Police (DGP), and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir seeking their response within 10 days to the plea.
