The Delimitation Commission, mandated to redraw the assembly constituencies of Jammu Kashmir, is likely to get a two-month extension to complete its task, sources aware of the development said. The term of the panel is coming to an end in early March and it would need more time to ready its final report, they said. Formed in March 2020, the panel was granted a one-year extension last year. Headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, it has Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and the state election commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir as its ex-officio members. 3,500 committed suicide due to unemployment in 2020: Home Ministry

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs said on Wednesday that 3,548 people died by suicide due to unemployment in 2020, The Indian Express reported. Citing the NCRB data, he said that between 2018 and 2020, 16,091 died by suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness – 4,970 in 2018; 5,908 in 2019; and 5,213 in 2020. According to NCRB data, suicides due to unemployment has been increasing over the last few years – the toll was 2,851 in 2019; 2,741 in 2018; 2,404 in 2017; 2,298 in 2016; 2,723 in 2015; and 2,207 in 2014. Daily Covid cases in Jammu and Kashmir fell to 34-day low, with 540 infections reported in the last 24 hours even as two persons succumbed to the virus during the time, officials said on Friday. They said 312 of the fresh cases were reported from Jammu Division and 228 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall infection tally to 449873. On January 7, 542 persons had tested positive for the pathogen in J&K. Regarding the fatalities, the officials told GNS that both of them were reported from Kashmir Valley. So far 4741 persons have succumbed to the virus—2320 in Jammu and 2421 in Kashmir.
