Man slips to death while returning home with firewood in Poonch

A 25-year-old young man died after he slipped while returning home with firewood from a jungle nearby his residence in Poonch district on Thursday. Official sources told GNS that one Manzoor Hussain (25) of Ucchad Nabana who was carrying firewood from nearby jungle (forest) slipped and fell down, resulting in his on the spot death. A police police party of Mankote reached the spot and completed legal formalities. SHO Mendhàr Manzoor Kohli confirmed the incident to GNS and said that body is being handed over to the family for last rites.(GNS)

A local court here has summoned Jitendra Narayan Tyagi alias Waseem Rizvi for his alleged statement against  Islam and Holy Quran. “Prima facie case for issuance of process for the offences punishable under sections 153A, 295A, 505 of Indian Penal Code is made out against the accused (Tyagi). PDD lineman electrocuted in Baramulla village

A lineman of Power Development Department (PDD) was on Thursday injured after he received an electric shock at Mukam village of Kreeri in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Official sources told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that a PDD lineman identified as Hilal Ahmed Lone son of Abdul Rahman Lone a resident of Kreeri while repairing an electric wire received an electric shock. He was rushed to SDH Kreeri where from doctors referred him to GMC Baramula for better treatment.(KNS)

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give a date for hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking transfer of the cases over the hijab row from the Karnataka High Court to itself. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana said: “Let the High Court decide first, then we may see it." The Chief Justice, however, said: “Please wait. Let the Karnataka High Court decide the matter first as they are hearing the matter today.” Sibal said schools and colleges were closed in Karnataka and girls were being stoned. And so the Supreme Court must hear the case. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal mentioned the matter and requested the apex court to list the matter urgently and said that what is happening in Karnataka was spreading in the entire country. UNI

Daily Covid cases in Jammu and Kashmir fell to 33-day low, with 547 infections reported in the last 24 hours even as seven persons succumbed to the virus during the time, officials said on Thursday. They said 307 of the fresh cases were reported from Jammu Division and 240 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall infection tally to 449333. On January 8, 655 cases were reported while 542 persons had tested positive on January 7. Regarding the fatalities, the officials told GNS that four were reported from Jammu division and three from Kashmir Valley. So far 4739 persons have succumbed to the virus so far—2320 in Jammu and 2419 in Kashmir.
