In the ensuing month of Ramadhan, Kashmir is consuming at least 100 trucks of watermelon per day at the cost of Rs 5 crore. On Friday, the inaugural match of the Serenity Casco Cricket League was played at Wanigam Payeen, Pattan in Baramulla district. The tournament was organised with the intent to promote sports and keep the youth away from the menace of drugs, a rapidly increasing issue in the Kashmir valley. Saqib Murtaza, KAS, Tehsildar Pattan inaugurated the Serenity Casco Cricket League. He, while talking on the occasion, urged youth to stay away from drugs and instead invest time in sports. The inaugural match was played between Red Avengers Dargam and Mars Eleven Wanigam. Red Avengers registered a big victory. Aqib Hassan was declared as the Man of the Match. Police on Friday evening recovered the dead body of a Sarpanch from an orchard in the Goshbugh Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The bullet-riddled body of the Sarpanch apparently shot dead by suspected militants was lying in the orchards. Police identified the victim as Manzoor Ahmed Bangroo son of Muhammad Sadiq Bangroo. BJP Spokesperson Altaf Thakur told news agency Kashmir News Trust that the victim was not affiliated with BJP as is being claimed. “We condemn this killing in strong terms,” Thakur said. A police official said that they recovered the dead body from the Goshbugh orchards of Pattan. A case has been registered and an investigation was taken up, he said. (KNT)
