Lightning kills Army man in Gulmarg

Lightning left an army soldier dead in ski resort Gulmarg here in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The lightning struck during the intervening night of June 10 and 11 at Roshni Army Picket in Gulmarg. Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that an army soldier from 18 Rashtriya Rifles who was identified as 32-year-old Lokendra Singh died after lightning struck at the Roshni Picket where he was posted. A police official confirmed the death of army soldier due to lightning. (KNT)

Sahil Gulzar The Jammu Kashmir, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh has ordered the establishment of Special Investigation Units (SIUs) in six districts of the Kashmir valley. The development comes at a time when security review meetings are being held from New Delhi to Srinagar in view of the recent targeted killings which have led to widespread demand by the Migrant Kashmiri Pandits for their mass transfer out of the Kashmir valley. The Home Minister during the security meeting asked for the strengthening of the Policing system and the establishment of six "safe zones", according to news reports. Missing man’s body recovered from Shopian forest, face mauled by wild animal

Mauled by a leopard, the dead body of a missing man has been retrieved from Heerpora forest area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district, official sources said. Mushtaq Ahmed Khatana son of Doda Khatana had gone missing on 23 May last month. The family had registered a missing report at the police station, claiming that the missing man is mentally unsound. Locals and police recovered his body from the forest area. A police official told news agency Kashmir News Trust that the face of the deceased is mauled by a wild animal probably a leopard. Police handed over the body to the family and registered a case in this regard. (KNT)

Government forces on Saturday found a suspected improvised explosive device (IED), planted on the roadside along the Baramulla—Srinagar highway in the Putkha area of Baramulla district. A senior officer told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the security forces detected the explosive device lying by the roadside following which the bomb disposal squad (BDS) was called in. The officer said that following the detection of the suspected IED, traffic on the Baramulla—Srinagar highway has been halted from both sides as a precautionary measure—(KNO)

Danishwar Hameed An encounter has started between militants and Government forces in the Khandipora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. Official sources told The Kashmiriyat that on Saturday night, a joint group of 9 RR,  CRPF and Jammu Kashmir Police after receiving inputs about militant presence in Kulgam's Khandipora launched a cordon and search operation. The hiding militants opened fire on the troopers during the cordon, triggering an encounter. 2-3 militants are believed to be trapped in the area. As per locals, searchlights have been installed around the encounter site amid an intermittent exchange of gunfire. Kishtwar seminary student drowns in South Kashmir

A student from a seminary drowned while enjoying the watera of Bringe nallah in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The victim as per reports was a student of Darul Aloom Sautul Awliya. Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that students from seminary had gone for a picnic where the 21-year-old student drowned to death at Bringi Nallah near Nowgam Anantnag. The victim has been identified as Tawseef Ahmed Laway son of Abdul Majeed, a resident of Doda Kishtwar. The body of the deceased was not retrieved till the filing of this story. (KNT)

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, Locals from Kulgam town said that on Thursday three electric poles were damaged in the town after strong winds after which electricity was snapped in the area. "Since then, the residents have been waiting for the electricity to restored, however, as of now the department has failed to restored electricity in the township," they said. Students of Government Medical College (GMC) in north Kashmir's Baramulla district are aghast over the non-availability of bus and hostel facilities. Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, the students said that they have approached the management several times, but their demands have not been heard during the last four years, causing immense suffering to the students.
