2 persons buried alive after coming under huge mound of Earth in Budgam

Two persons were killed after they came under a huge mound of earth in central Kashmir's Budgam on Wednesday evening, official sources said. They told GNS that the incident took place when two persons identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Parray (44) and Fayaz Ahmad Parray (45), both residents of Budgam, came under the huge mound during extraction of soil in Bandgam village. Soon after a rescue operation was initiated at the site, following which bodies of the duo were recovered and subsequently shifted to a nearby health facility for necessary medico-legal formalities, they said. Confirming the incident, a police official told GNS that cognizance has been taken for further investigations. (GNS)

North Kashmir: Civilian injured in ongoing Sopore encounter

A civilian was injured in an ongoing gunfight at Bomai area of North Kashmir's Sopore on Wednesday evening. A top police officer told GNS that a civilian namely Ali Mohd Ganai son of Abdul Ahad Ganai resident of Bomai recieved bullet wound in his leg during gunfight in Bomai. He has been shifted to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment, his condition is stated to be stable, the officer added. Earlier one militant was also killed during intial exchange of fire with security forces.(GNS)

An average of 82 people were murdered daily across India in 2021, while more than 11 kidnappings were reported every single hour during the year, according to latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. The rate of murder per one lakh population was highest in Jharkhand, while that of kidnapping and abduction in Delhi, NCRB's 'Crime in India 2021' report showed. A total of 29,272 cases of murder involving 30,132 victims were registered during 2021, showing a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent over 2020 (29,193 cases), showed the NCRB, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. A militant has been killed in the ongoing encounter that broke out between security forces and militants in Sopore village in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday evening, police said. A fierce Gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Bomai area of Sopore in North Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday. Reports reaching GNS that a joint team of Police, Army's 22RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Bomai. As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight. A senior police officer also confirmed to GNS about exchange of firing between militants and security forces. As per the sources two to three militants are believed to be trapped.(GNS)

Jammu Kashmir reported 140 fresh covid-19 cases while there was no death due to the virus during the last 24 hours, officials said on Wednesday. They said that 25 cases were reported from Jammu division and 115 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall tally to 477784. Among the cases, 173671 are from Jammu division and 304113 from Kashmir Valley. Providing district wise details of the cases, they said, Jammu reported 21 cases, Udhampur 3, Rajouri 0, Doda 1, Kathua 0, Samba 0, Kishtwar 0, Poonch 0, Ramban 0, Reasi 0, Srinagar 36, Baramulla 18, Budgam 14, Pulwama 10, Kupwara 5, Anantnag 19, Bandipora 3, Ganderbal 7, Kulgam 3 and Shopian 0. The army on Wednesday said that it rescued an Israeli national from high altitude in Ladakh after receiving a distress call. Kashmir University on Tuesday asked the heads of its departments and directors to seek prior permission of the authorities before inviting any foreign dignitaries, three days after it sought information about a US national who is said to have “delivered lectures” in the varsity in January-February this year, as per a report by Hindustan Times.
