The Jammu Kashmir Waqf Board on Monday ordered ban on Dastaar Bandi (Turban-tying) ceremonies of people particularly political leaders at all shrines and religious places governed by the board across JK. In an order, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), JK Waqf Board chairperson stated that Dastaar Bandi of people for religious achievement will be allowed with prior permission. SC rejects plea seeking SIT probe into killing of Kashmiri Pandits

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe in the targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir in 1990. The matter is currently being heard by a bench headed by SK Kaul, News 18 reported. The plea was filed by Ashutosh Taploo, whose father Tika Lal Taploo was killed by in Srinagar in 1989. Taploo's killing triggered panic among Kashmiri Pandits who started leaving the Valley and was also followed by a series of target killings of Kashmiri Pandit leaders and activists in Kashmir. The apex court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea and seek other alternative remedial measures available in law.

House, cowshed gutted in fire incident in Bandipora

A residential house and cowshed in its vicinity was gutted in a fire incident in Sheikhmuqaam village of Aloosa Bandipora last night, officials said on Monday. They said a single-storey residential house, belonging to one Javad Ahmad Gojer son of Late Khaleel ullah, was gutted along with household good in the fire incident. Also, one cowshed and a Tinshed belonging to his neighbor Mohammad Shafi son of Late Taj Mohammad was also damaged in the fire, the cause of which was not immediately known. Confirming it, an official of the Fire and Emergency department told GNS that timely response by Fire Services Station headquartered in Bandipora saved surrounding property worth of crores of rupees. Weather department here on Monday forecast mainly dry weather over Jammu and Kashmir in next 24 hours. A meteorological department official here told GNS that “mainly dry weather to isolated very light rain” is expected in the subsequent two days. Regarding the minimum temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 12.6°C against 12.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.7°C above normal for the summer capital during this time of the year, he said. Qazigund recorded a low of 9.8°C against 11.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.5°C below normal there, he said. A man was charred to death after a truck he was travelling in caught fire on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway in Kathua district here, police said on Monday. The victim, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was the truck driver's helper, and they were travelling towards Jammu when the vehicle suddenly engulfed into flames late on Sunday, they said. The driver jumped out of the burning truck and rescued himself, but his helper failed to come out of the vehicle, they said. A fire tender reached the spot and controlled the fire, but it was too late to save the man, they said, adding a detailed investigation in being conducted.–(PTI)

Several assistant professors posted in different educational institutions in summer capital Srinagar are using ‘forged documents’ to evade the tax, as per news reports. Reports reaching Kashmir Dot Com, a local news agency, said most of the assistant professors have forged the documents showing that they are staying at rented accommodations in Srinagar. The ground investigation reveals that they have their own residential houses in Srinagar and are not living in rented accommodation. These professors have submitted the ‘falsifying and forged’ documents to claim tax exemptions or to reduce their tax liability.
