Alert troops of Army on Thursday opened fire after witnessing a suspicious movement along Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector. Official sources told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Army troops this evening observed suspicious movements on LoC in Poonch sector. They said that the troops fired some rounds towards the Pakistan side with small calibre weapons. Sources, however, said that no further engagement or retaliation was reported when the report was last filed. The fresh firing came a day after security forces gunned down four heavily armed militants in Sidhra area of Jammu. The high-alert was sounded for the forces and especially for border sectors—(KNO)

The year 2022 saw 115 encounters in which over 180 militants were killed while local militant recruitment remained lowest in the last six years in Jammu Kashmir. Majority of encounters were reported in the first six months of the year 2022. The last two months of the year bidding goodbye saw a few encounters only. Mughal road, Sgr-Leh highway closed amid snowfall

Mughal road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian, as well as Srinagar-Leh highway were closed after fresh snowfall. A traffic department official here however said that traffic was plying on Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with outside world. “Mughal road and SSG road closed for vehicular movement due to fresh snowfall,” the official told GNS. Firefighter falls down, Injured in Kuzer Baramulla

A firefighter suffered head injury after he fell down while dousing of blaze in a 3-storey shopping complex housing a restaurant, several shops and a computer institute at Kunzer area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Official sources told GNS soon after the information, fire tenders were rushed to the spot and firefighters started operation immediately. Before bringing it to control, the fire damaged a restaurant, various shops including bakery, and a computer institute. Three persons including a cab driver from Srinagar were killed in two different road accidents in the Jammu region on Thursday. Official sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that a driver from the Dalgate area of Srinagar was killed after he lost control of his vehicle falling into a deep gorge near Kela Morh along the Srinagar-Jammu Highway in Ramban district during the wee hours of Thursday. In another accident near Hamosan village in Reasi district's Chasana area, two cousins were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge. The victims were identified as 27-year-old Gurbaksh Singh and his 32-year-old cousin Manjeet Singh. Police have registered cases in both incidents under relevant sections of law. [KNT]

Amid the forecast for intermittent light to moderate snow at scattered places during the next 24 hours, minimum temperatures recorded a rise but continued to hover below the sub-zero level in Kashmir and Ladakh on Thursday. A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.2°C against last night’s temperature of minus 5.6°C. The temperature was 1.1°C below normal for the summer capital, the official said. Srinagar has so far seen the coldest temperature this season on December 25 when mercury plummeted to minus 5.8°C.
