Mercury falls below freezing point in Kashmir, Widespread snowfall predicted

As Jammu Kashmir awaits snowfall and rains amid the forecast by the meteorological department, the minimum temperature fell below freezing point in the valley on Monday, officials said. A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.4°C against last night’s 1.0°C. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was 1.1°C below normal for the summer capital. Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 1.0°C against 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir. Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 4.7°C against minus 6.3°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Two residential houses damaged in Noorbagh blaze

At least two residential houses were damaged in a fire incident in Guzarbal area of Noorbagh in summer capital Srinagar on Monday morning. Reports reaching news agency Kashmir Dot Com said that two residential houses were gutted in a fire incident in the Guzarbal area this morning. They said that fire tenders doused the flames on time and prevented any further damage. However, there was no loss of life or injury reported in this incident. A police officer also confirmed the fire mishap and said, cognizance of the incident has been taken, and the cause of fire was not immediately known, however investigation has been set into motion. Two IED's were recovered and destroyed in Rajouri district on Sunday evening, officials said on Monday. A top official told The Kashmir Scroll that on Sunday evening at around 1800 hrs a joint search operation was launched by Police, SOG Rajouri, Army 225 field Regiment and CRPF 72Bn at Dassal and its adjoining area. He said that during search two IED’s were recovered at Dassal following which BDS was called in who Later on destroyed these IED's. He said that a case FIR NO. 39/2023 U/S 13/16/UAP Act, 3/4 Explosive Act has been registered and further investigation has been taken up.

A suspicious material like Improvised Explosive Device was recovered on Sunday at Budhal road near Kotranka town in Rajouri district. Official sources told GNS that today evening information was recieved by police station Kandi that a suspicious object like IED was detected in Jaglani area. IMD predicts increased snowfall activity in Kashmir till January 26

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecasted increased snowfall activity in Jammu Kashmir during till January 26. The weather department said that minimum temperatures will rise by 2-3°C over many parts of East India during the next 3 days. It further predicted that dense fog is very likely to prevail during night and morning hours over Himachal Pradesh and Bihar during the next 24 hours and Odisha during the next 48 hours. The IMD also informed that the minimum temperatures remained in the range of 6-10°C over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Rajasthan, Bihar, East Rajasthan, and northwest Madhya Pradesh in the past twenty-four hours. An avalanche hit Hussangam village of Tulail in Kashmir's Bandipora district on Sunday, however, no loss of life or damage has been reported in the area. An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the avalanche hit Hussangam village today afternoon. He said, soon after the incident teams from the administration rushed to the spot to assess the situation even as no damage or loss of life was reported. One of Hizb’s Longest surviving militant arrested in Shopian, says police

The Jammu Kashmir Police on Sunday evening claimed to have arrested a militant in south Kashmir's Shopian district. An official said that one active militant  Nasir Ahmed Shergojri, who had joined the militancy in 2017 and was one of the longest-surviving Hizb militants was arrested by a joint team of the Indian Army and Police. Nasir, son of Ali Mohammed, a resident of Shopian's Homuhuna area was affiliated to Hizb ul Mujahideen. "Shopian Police & Army arrested one of the longest surviving HM terrorist active since 2017 namely Nasir Ahmed Sher Gojri @ Qasim Bhai S/o Ali Mohd R/o HomHuna Nagbal, involved in various criminal cases. Militants on Sunday evening hurled a grenade at the Eid gah area of central Kashmir's Srinagar district, Officials said. As per details, one person was injured in the attack and was shifted to the nearby hospital. "One grenade was lobbed by terrorists in Eidgah area which caused minor splinter injury to one person namely Ajaz Ahmed Deva S/o Abdul Rasheed Deva aged 32 years R/o Sangam, Srinagar.
