Search operation intensified to track 3 men for jumping checkpoint in Rajouri

The search operation to track down three suspected persons, who jumped a police checkpoint and escaped to a forest area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, continued on Thursday, officials said. “We are searching for the three persons who escaped into the forest belt after jumping the checkpoint of police,” Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Mukesh Singh said. However, he clarified that there were no weapons or bags with them. “Terror angle is unlikely in this case,” he added. Girl allegedly hangs self to death in Pattan village, second case in 24 hours

On Thursday, a 21-year-old girl allegedly hanged self to death in the Trikolbal village of Pattan in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. An official told the Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the girl hanged herself to death at her residence in Trikolbal village. He said she was rushed to Pattan hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident and started further investigations. A constable affiliated with Air Force allegedly shot himself to death in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that a constable identified as Malket Singh (4469804-M DSC) who was affiliated with 1st Wing Air Force fired himself with his service Rifle at Air Field falling under the jurisdiction of police station Budgam. The Supreme Court on Thursday put on hold the Uttarakhand High Court’s order to evict over 4,000 families in Haldwani from land claimed by the Railways. “There cannot be uprooting of 50,000 people overnight. There has to be segregation of people who have no right on the land and the need to rehabilitation while recognizing the need of railways,” the Supreme Court stated. The top court added that the next hearing would be on February 7, according to Bar and Bench.

State Investigation Unit (SIU) of police on Thursday carried out searches at various locations in frontier North Kashmir's Kupwara district, officials said. They told GNS that sleuths alongside Naib Tehsildar reached Mirnag in Manzhar area and conducted searches of a house. Similarly the team alongside DySP DAR Kupwara reached Kanibakh Batpora and conducted searches at another house. The team also raided a residential house at Salkoot Kupwara, in presence of Naib Tehsildar Kupwara and DO PP Bazaar Kupwara. The team alongside SHO Kralpora raided a house at Babapora. With continuous dip in temperatures to sub-zero levels in Kashmir valley, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday said chilly weather puts people at greater risk of high blood pressure. In a statement, issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), DAK president Dr Nisar ul Hassan said falling temperatures in winter cause hike in blood pressure which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes, two leading causes of death and disability in the valley. Severe cold conditions continued unabated in Kashmir Valley with Srinagar, Qazigund, and Kupwara experiencing the season’s coldest night on Thursday. A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.4°C against last night’s minus 5.2°C. Today’s minimum temperature was 4.3°C below normal and surpassed the previous lowest temperature that was recorded on December 25 when mercury plummeted to minus 5.8°C in the summer capital. A filtration plant constructed by the Public Health Engineering department in the Chanchmarg Shadab Karewa area of Shopian has been abandoned due to unknown reasons forcing people to drink contaminated water. The University of Kashmir clarified on Wednesday that due process has been followed in evaluation of answer-scripts and assured that claims of students regarding the evaluation carried out in some subjects are being addressed on merit.
