‘Passport officer can’t act as mouthpiece of J-K CID,’ HC says after denial of passport to Mehbooba Mufti’s mother

The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court has pulled up authorities for denying passport to PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti's mother, saying the passport officer cannot "act as a mouthpiece" of the CID. Justice M A Chowdhary, while hearing the petition of Mehbooba's mother Gulshan Nazir, said it appears, there is no ground to refuse her request for issue or renewal of passport. "Even, there is not an iota of allegation against the petitioner that may point out to any security concerns. The police verification report formulated by CID-CIK cannot override the statutory provisions of Section 6 of the Passport Act 1967," the judge said in an order pronounced on Saturday. Search ops enters day 2 as drowned Baramulla girl remains untraceable

The search operation to locate the body of a girl, who jumped into the river Jhelum in Khanpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, entered day 2nd on Sunday. An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the girl had jumped into the river Jhelum yesterday afternoon near Khanpora bridge and soon after a search and rescue operation was launched. He said the operation was however halted for the night as the girl remained untraced. “Today morning the operation has been resumed,” he said. Notably, this is the second such incident in the district within 20 days as earlier a girl jumped into the Jhelum in Sopore town, while her body still remains untraceable—(KNO)

Unidentified woman’s body found in Srinagar’s LD hospital premises

The body of an unidentified woman was found on the premises of LD hospital in Srinagar on Sunday morning. An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the body of a woman aged around 40 years, wearing a brown Pheran, was found on the premises of LD hospital. Suspected militants on Sunday snatched weapon from Central Reserve Police personnel near Below Rajpora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A top police officer told GNS that militants snatched a rifle from CRPF personnel of 183 BN posted on Naka duty near Below area. Suhail Dar A Kashmiri youth has gone missing from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh where he had gone to sell shawls. Yasir Ahmad Shah, who is a resident of the Aishmuqam area in south Kashmir's Anantnag district went to Lucknow in November 2022 to sell shawls and other warm clothes in winter. Hundreds of poor Kashmiris go to markets in Delhi, Lucknow, Punjab, Bombay, Calcutta, Bangalore, and other Indian states to earn for the winter months. The minimum temperature plummeted to season’s lowest in the famous resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg, recording a low of minus 9.4°C and 8.2°C respectively, even as Srinagar saw an increase for the second consecutive day on Sunday. A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 0.5°C against last night’s 0.4°C. The temperature was 2.6°C above normal for the summer capital, the official said. In jail for nine years, Kashmiri youth qualifies LLM entrance examinations

A 28 year old Kashmiri youth from Sopore area in north Kashmir who has been jailed for the last nine years has qualified the Masters at Law (LLM) at the university of Kashmir. Locals from Sopore told The Kashmiriyat that Feroz Ahmed Dar, who is a resident of Alsafa Colony in Sopore has qualified for the  LLM Entrance Examination 2022. Feroz is booked in a case from March 19, 2013, when a youth Suhail Ahmad Sofi son of Ghulam Nabi Sofi of Doabgah, Sopore was killed by suspected militants. The Police had said that one of the accused  revealed the involvement of Feroze Ahmad Dar son of Bashir Ahmad Dar resident of Alsafa Colony, Sopore in the murder of Suhail Ahmad Sofi.
