Congress leader and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi Friday accused the Jammu Kashmir administration of a big security lapse at the Qazigund tunnel stating that police were missing to control the crowd that had come to his reception. “When we crossed Tunnel, there was a huge crowd for my reception. Teenager injured after shot at by 12-Bore rifle in Kupwara

A 14-year-old boy was injured after being hit by a shot from a 12-Bore rifle in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that an unknown person used his 12-Bore rifle ‘illegally leading to the injuries to a young boy identified as Shair Ahmed Khan, a resident of the Payerpora Hyhama area of Kupwara district. The victim was taken to Sub-District Hospital Kupwara where doctors referred him to GMC Baramulla. The condition of the victim is stated to be stable. He has received injuries to his face. Police in this regard has registered an FIR vide number 12/2023 under section 307 IPC 3/27 Arms Act and launched a hunt to track down the accused. [KNT]

Burglars loot four shops in Kulgam main town

Danishwar Hameed  Unknown burglars looted four shops in the main town of Kulgam in south Kashmir. An official told The Kashmiriyat that during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday burglars looted four shops in Kulgam town. He said that thieves decamped with goods worth lakhs of rupees besides cash of over one lakh rupees from the four shops. Meanwhile a team of Jammu Kashmir Police has reached the spot and are investigating the matter. Locals said that the shops that have been looted include provisional store, two medical stores and a Bakery shop. FDA’s proposal for annual Covid-19 vaccine reasonable: DAK

With US Food and Drug Administration’s proposal for annual Covid-9 vaccine, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday termed the move reasonable. “Shifting the strategy from multiple Covid-19 vaccine boosters to once a year shot makes lot of sense,” said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). Dr Hassan said as per the recommendations, people may need yearly Covid shots as they do for the flu. “Most individuals may only need to receive one dose of Covid-19 vaccine. However elderly, immunocompromised and children 2 years or younger may need 2 shots,” he said. “Currently, everyone 6 months and older are required to complete primary vaccination series before they get booster dose months later.” ...

Grenade found near residence of Ex-MLA Surankote

Police on Thursday recovered a live grenade near the entrance of the house of Choudhary Mohammad Akram, a former member of the erstwhile Legislative Assembly of J&K from Surankote, in Poonch district. Official sources told GNS that the grenade was found at around 1800 hours near the entrance of Choudhary’s house at Lassana falling under the jurisdiction of police station Surankote. “Police, CRPF, and Army reached the spot immediately,” they said. While the grenade has been recovered, they said, the incident comes five days after the street light in his lawn was damaged and splinter marks were seen at the wall of his house. Srinagar records 1689 accidents with 225 deaths in last five years

An average 337 accidents in a year claimed 45 people in Srinagar, showed official data. According to the figures accessed and reviewed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Srinagar witnessed 1689 accidents with 225 fatalities from 2018 till November 2022. The official figures state that a total of 1739 people were injured in accidents in Srinagar during the period with June 2022 recording the highest number of fatalities comprising 11 deaths, and 39 injuries in 40 accidents. The official data showed that 2018 recorded 375 accidents which resulted in 46 deaths and 383 injuries.
