A family from Kupwara, whose kin, Idrees Mir, a former government teacher was sacked by the administration for his alleged role in anti-national activities in May 2021 and later booked under the Public Safety Act in November 2022, has appealed to the LG-led administration to release their kin over humanitarian grounds. The drive to evict “encroachers” from nearly 1,900 hectares of forest and revenue land in Assam’s Sonitpur district continued for the second day on Wednesday, with 12,000-odd people, who were allegedly staying there illegally for decades, left in the lurch, a senior official said, reports PTI. UP official, Police allegedly set house on fire during ‘eviction’ drive, mother-daughter charred to death

A 45-year-old woman and her daughter, 20, died in a fire during an anti-encroachment drive at a village in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The family alleged that cops set their hut ablaze when the women were inside. Local cops yesterday claimed that the two set themselves on fire, but the state police have now registered a murder case against 13 people. ‘Calling them encroachers resolves no issues’, Bombay HC stays demolition of ‘illegal’ structures

Bombay High Court (HC) has restrained officials from demolishing "unauthorised" structures on Railway land in Greater Mumbai. An order was passed by the division bench while hearing a plea by a group of slum dwellers residing on railway land in Bandra East, challenging the demolition notice. The division bench came down on the railway authorities for issuing demolition notices without taking concrete steps to rehabilitate the displaced persons. A youth from Budgam ended his life by jumping into river Jhelum at Safakadal bridge last night. Reports reaching said that an undergraduate student from the Khag area of Budgam jumped into the river Jhelum at around 8 pm on Wednesday evening. The youth had gone missing from his home at 1 pm yesterday. “Initially, the family tried to call his number but it was switched off. Later we came to know that he had kept his phone on flight mode in his room at home,” a family member told The Kashmiriyat.
