Death toll in Syria, Turkey earthquake crosses 16,000

The death toll in the devastating earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey crossed 16,000 people on Thursday afternoon. On Monday, a powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria followed by three more earthquakes. Officials in Turkey said that the quake was centered about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Gaziantep about 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the town of Nurdagi. Hours later, a second earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck southeastern Turkey's Kahramanmaras region. Shutdown in parts of Srinagar on Afzal Guru’s 10th anniversary

Parts of Srinagar city on Thursday observed a shutdown on the 10th death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged inside Tihar Jail, Press Trust of India reported. Shops and other business establishments in Nowhatta, Gojwara and Nalla Mar Road areas were closed due to the strike called by banned JKLF. Two dead bodies stuck in Handwara due to closure of Kupwara-Karnah road

As the Kupwara-Karnah road remains blocked due to the accumulation of snow on 701 highway and continuous snowfall, two bodies of Karnah residents remained stuck in north Kashmir’s Handwara. Although the district administration has kept the bodies in the mortuaries, their relatives are demanding airlifting them so that their last rights could be performed at the earliest. Two natives from Karnah, one from Umrohi and another from Dildar Batpora died a week before in Srinagar hospital and their bodies are stuck in Handwara. Panun Kashmir welcomes eviction drives in J-K, demands probe against NC, PDP

278 cases of sexual abuse against children reported in Jammu Kashmir in 2022

Jammu Kashmir, as per official records, reported as many as 278 cases of sexual abuse against children in the year 2022, 168 of them were reported from Jammu district alone, Daily Excelsior reported. Data suggests, there were 859 cases of POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) pending before the designated courts of the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir, as on December 31, 2022. Only 72 of the 278 new POCSO cases that entered the court system in 2022 were successfully resolved. This suggests that, despite an increase in sexual crimes against children, justice is not being served to the victims quickly enough. MeT predicts snowfall, scattered rains in Kashmir during next 24 hours

The Meterological Department  Thursday forecast rain or snow in Kashmir division and rain in Jammu division during the next 24 hours. "Light to moderate rain/snow is likely in Valley and rain in Jammu division during the next 24 hours", a MeT department official said. On Wednesday, the weather was dry and cloudy in Jammu Kashmir. Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded 0.8 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 2.4 and Gulmarg minus 4.2 degree as the minimum temperature. In Ladakh region, Kargil registered minus 15 and Leh minus 10. Jammu clocked a low of 9.9 degrees, Katra -- 9.1, Batote --5.7, Banihal and Bhaderwah as 2.6 and 3.7 respectively as the minimum temperature.

‘Remove encroachments within a week or face legal action’, Officials issue notice in Watergam Baramulla

Officials in the Watergam area of Baramulla district have issued a ten-day time to local residents to free "state land" within a period of seven days in the north Kashmir area. Rajouri attack: Militants hiding in upper reaches, police announces Rs 10 lakh reward

The Jammu Kashmir Police has said that militants involved in the Dhangri village attack are hiding in the upper reaches of the Rajouri district and announced a reward of 10 lakh rupees for anyone providing information about them.
