Several chinar trees, which line the iconic Polo View Road in Srinagar, have been lopped by the authorities as part of the Smart City project, leading to an outcry by environmental activists, reported PTI. The authorities defended the move saying it was done following the set procedure. Under the Jammu and Kashmir Specified Trees Act-1969, some tree species such as mulberry, walnut and chinar cannot be felled or lopped in view of their importance in local economy or heritage. Raja Muzaffar Bhat, an environmental activist, said chinar trees are a heritage of Kashmir and if the government had to cut down these trees because of road-widening projects or construction of flyovers, there is a provision of transplantation. One-year-old girl drowns to death in Shopian

An 18-month-old baby girl drowned to death in Feeripora area of Shopian on Friday. An official said that an 18-month-old girl went missing from her residence in Feeripora at around 3 pm today. Soon after the news spread, the locals started searching for her and after around two hours, her body was found in a small canal, close to her residence. She has been identified as Zoya Bilal, daughter of Bilal Ahmad Dar of Feeripora, Shopian. Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident. (KNO)

The Jammu Kashmir administration has declared five villages of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district as ‘drug-free’ villages. This claim has been made by the police and district administration. These villages are Dandoosa, Bonen, Hardwail, Naroo and Khag. The government said that these villages have achieved 100% drug-free status with the concerted efforts of the District Administration. Police have arrested four Hindus for vandalizing temples in Bulandshahr district in  Uttar Pradesh. According to a report by Muslim Mirror, the four identified as Harish Sharma, Shivam, Keshav, and Ajay have been detained for their involvement in the act of vandalizing idols in four temples located in Baral village of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. At least twelve idols were vandalized by the four which evoked massive protests by right wing Hindu organizations. They also demanded strict action against the culprits responsible for attacking the temples. As per the locals, the four intentionally targeted the temples, aiming to disrupt the peaceful coexistence within the society.

The Motor Vehicles department on Thursday said they are going to add a fleet of 30 more electric buses in July next month to enhance the public transport system in Srinagar. A senior official at the Regional Transport Office here told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the department is going to receive 30 electric buses from Srinagar Smart City next month which will be pressed for public transport service in the city. “A total of 100 electric buses are to be received by the Srinagar Smart City by October this year, out of which 30 buses are likely to be made operational in July on various routes of the city,” he said. Minor boy dies after falling into drain in Srinagar

Eleven days after drowning in a drain in the Srinagar city, an eleven-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Srinagar. Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, the father of the boy identified as Ahmed Bin Javed, who is a resident of Batamaloo in Srinagar said that on May 28, Ahmed slipped into a drain in the Batamaloo area. "There is a construction work going on at the drain in the area," he said adding that Ahmed fell into an open drain causing critical wounds to him after which he was rushed to the hospital. An armed Personnel was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Mehjoor Nagar in central Kashmir's Srinagar district this evening Reports reaching GNS said that a man was found dead at his rented accommodation in Mehjoor Nagar. The police were intimated, which reached the site and took the body into its possession. Landless poor to be granted houses in Jammu: LG Manoj Sinha

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced the admin's decision to provide land and construct houses for the landless poor, adding that a notification will soon be issued in this direction. The announcement was made while the LG was addressing a function at Garkhal border village panchayat in the Akhnoor belt of Jammu district.
