Tomato prices may touch rupees 300 per kilogram soon

The kitchen staple, tomato, could soon cost you Rs 300 per kilogram, according to wholesale traders. Kaushik, a member of Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), said that vegetable wholesalers are facing losses as the sale of tomato, capsicum, and other seasonal vegetables has fallen drastically. He said that the prices of tomatoes have shot up to Rs 220 per kilo from Rs 160 per kilo in the wholesale market, owing to which retail prices can also go up. Meanwhile, Mother Dairy started selling the key kitchen staple at a whopping Rs 259 per kg on Wednesday via its Safal retail store. On Thursday, British MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi was stopped for around two hours by immigration officials after he landed at the Shri Guru Ramdas ji International Airport here on Thursday, PTI reported. Though there was no official word about stopping the MP, the sources said the Labour MP from Slough was not carrying his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. Dhesi, who's known for being outspoken on Sikh issues, was made to wait for two hours before being allowed to leave the airport, they said. A Punjab police official said Dhesi arrived from Birmingham at around 9 am and he did not complain of any difficulty or problem faced inside the airport. A mosque was set on fire while a short circuit apparently triggered a blaze in another in Haryana’s Nuh district, police said on Thursday. The incident happened four days after a mosque was burnt down by Hindutva mobs in the Nu area of Haryana. No one was injured in the incidents that took place around 11:30 pm on Wednesday, they said. While one of the mosques is located near Vijay Chowk, the other is near a police station. Both mosques suffered damage. Superintendent of Police (Nuh), Varun Singla, said, “Light arson has been done in one mosque while short circuit seems to be the reason for the fire in the other. Weather department on Friday forecast mainly hot and dry weather in Jammu Kashmir but isolated late afternoon or evening showers has not been ruled out. “Mainly hot and dry weather is expected today. Rain may occur at isolated to scattered places of Jammu & Kashmir towards late afternoon /evening,” a meteorological department official here told GNS. He said that no large change was expected with the weather on weekend and same conditions are expected on August 5-6. He said from August 7-10, “mainly dry weather” is expected. “There is no forecast of any major rainfall this week and weather is expected to be mainly hot and dry.” (GNS)

National Investigation Agency on Friday morning conducted raids at five different locations in south Kashmir in a militancy-related case. Official sources told GNS that the NIA team with the assistance of police and CRPF started raiding five different places in Kulgam and Pulwama areas of south Kashmir. The raids were also being carried out at the house of killed Hizb Commander Umar Ganie resident at Shouch. “The searches are being carried in connection with militancy case RC 5/22,” they added.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable Chetan Singh (33) is accused of gunning down his senior colleague Tika Ram Meena and three passengers aboard the moving train near Palghar railway station on the outskirts of Mumbai in the early hours of Monday with his automatic weapon, officials had said. Tension prevailed in both districts where police and central forces have been deployed in large numbers to keep the situation under control. So far 44 FIRs have been registered and 139 have been arrested, including 23 on Wednesday night in connection with the Nuh riots. 181 children went missing in Jammu Kashmir from July 1, 2022 till now: Report

181 children went missing from Jammu and Kashmir between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, official data from the Ministry of Women and Child Development reveals. According to the data, during the same time period, 58,546 children across India went missing. Prior to this, data from the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) showed that by 2020, 627 children, including 350 boys and 277 girls, had disappeared in J&K. In Jammu and Kashmir, 230 children, including 167 girls and 63 boys, went missing in just 2020. According to NCRB data, only 29.2 percent of the missing children in J&K were ever found.
