Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on Friday said that the congregational prayers led by Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at historic Jamia Srinagar Masjid concluded peacefully. Talking to reporters, Bidhuri, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that prayers concluded peacefully, which is the dividend of peace process. Tragedy struck a Doda family, whose seven members were critically injured among which one died in the hospital after a speeding truck hit their vehicle when the driver was trying to cross the highway near Levidora Qazigund area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday. Police sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that 7 members of the Doda family including the driver were on their way to Srinagar from Doda and were travelling in an Eco vehicle (JK06B 0901) when a truck hit the left extreme portion of the vehicle while the driver was taking a turn. Despite the month long protests by the Gujjar and Bakerwal community against any change to the existing ST status, the Jammu Kashmir administration has granted a six-month extension for the Commission led by retired Justice G.D. Sharma, formed in March 2020, to review reservation policies for various groups. The term of the commission expired on 18 September 2023, however, the bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 26, 2023. It amends the Jammu Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004 that provides for reservation in jobs and admission in professional institutions to members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other socially and educationally backward classes. A Deputy Superintendent of Jammu Kashmir Police, Sheikh Aadil Mushtaq who was arrested on Saturday has been accused of connections with a militant operative among other charges, NDTV reported. The official has been helping a militant associate in evading arrest and attempting to frame a police officer who was investigating the case. Mushtaq was arrested on multiple charges, including corruption, and was presented before a magistrate in Srinagar, who remanded him to police custody for six days. Phone analysis of the militant suspect arrested in July revealed that Aadil Mushtaq maintained frequent contact with him and allegedly provided guidance on how to evade the law.
