Crime against children in Jammu Kashmir saw 35% rise in 2022: NCRB report

Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a hike of 35 percent in crime against children in the last two years, reveals the latest NCRB report. As per the report, a copy of which is available with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), compared to 606 cases in 2020, 920 cases of crime against children have been registered by police in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2022. In 2021, JK had recorded 845 cases of crime against children. At national level, a total of 1,62,449 cases of crime against children were registered during 2022, showing an increase of 8.7% over 2021 (1,49,404 cases). As per the report last year, 316 cases have been registered under POCSO by the police in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu Kashmir Police on Wednesday said that it acted swiftly to a bomb threat call made to a private school in Jammu, however, it later turned out to be a hoax call. In a post on X, Jammu police, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that it conducted extensive search and sanitised the area, however, the threat turned out to be hoax. Police said that FIR has been filed in the regards and investigation has been taken up. “Jammu Police acted swiftly on bomb threat by an unknown caller to one private school. Delhi Court to hear petition seeking death penalty to Yasin Malik in February

The Delhi High Court Tuesday listed for hearing on February 14 a plea by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) seeking death penalty for Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik in a terror funding case. The court directed that Malik, who had pleaded guilty to the charges, shall join the court proceedings virtually. Noting that none appeared on behalf of Malik, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief currently serving a life term in the case, a bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait andpt Shalinder Kaur adjourned the matter until February 14 next year. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently released its comprehensive data for 2022, shedding light on the surge in crime against women, children, Schedule Caste and Tribes (SC/ST) as well as cyber crimes across the country. A total of 65,893 cybercrime cases were registered in 2022, marking a substantial 24.4 per cent increase from the previous year’s 52,974 cases. The crime rate in this category rose from 3.9 in 2021 to 4.8 in 2022. Delving deeper into the cybercrime statistics, a staggering 64.8 per cent of the cases were motivated by fraud, accounting for 42,710 instances. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved a 15 percent increase in power tariffs for non-metered consumers in Kashmir, affecting approximately 7 lakh users. This decision follows the nod for a 30 percent tariff hike initially, but with the withdrawal of 15 percent electricity duty, the practical hike is now 15 percent, Srinagar based Greater Kashmir reported. Six labourers from Waltangoo area of Kund in South Kashmir's Kulgam district were killed and as many sustained injuries when their vehicle fell into a gorge near Sunni in Shimla district on Monday morning, sources said.
