A temple priest was arrested after he filed a police complaint blaming two Muslim boys for breaking Ganesh Idol inside a temple in Uttar Pradesh, Police said. According to an officer of UP Police, the incident took place on Tuesday (July 16), at Taulihawa in Barhni block in Siddharth Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh, when a temple priest named Kricharam had registered a complaint with Police accusing two Muslim boys of vandalizing a temple idol. "Pujari Kricharam had accused two Muslim boys named Manan and Sonu of vandalizing the Ganesh idol at the said temple. One militant has been killed during an exchange of gunfire in Keran area of North Kashmir's Kupwara after an infiltration bid was foiled. Reliable sources told Srinagar based agency Kashmir Scroll that an exchange of fire took place between security forces and militants at Keran area of Kupwara district in which one terrorist has been killed so far. They said that the exchange of fire started after Security forces including 06 RR and Kupwara Police have received input of infiltration in the Keran area following which operation was started.(KS) Further details are awaited.

Woman dies after falling from tree in Baramulla

A woman from Baramulla died after falling from a tree in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday late evening. An official said that Afroza Begum (40), wife of Mohammad Maqbool Lone, a resident of Satarteran Baramulla, fell from a tree and sustained injuries. The injured woman was initially taken to SDH Tangmarg for treatment and later referred to JVC Hospital Srinagar, where she succumbed to her injuries. Early Thursday, officials reported that a new group of 4,383 pilgrims departed from a base camp here for the Amarnath shrine in the southern Kashmir Himalayas. The 21st batch included 1,086 women and eight children, departing Bhagwati Nagar base camp in 157 vehicles at 3:15 am. Of these, 2,682 pilgrims will travel the traditional 48-km route from Pahalgam in Anantnag district, while 1,701 have chosen the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Senior advocate and former general secretary of Jammu Kashmir High Court Bar Association Mohammad Ashraf Bhat was arrested from his residence here and booked under the Public Safety Act, officials said on Thursday. Bhat was arrested from his residence in Rawalpora area of the city late on Wednesday night and booked under the PSA, they said. The former general secretary of the Bar Association was shifted to Kathua jail in Jammu region. Bhat is the third senior functionary of the Bar Association to be arrested. While former Bar president Nazir Ahmad Ronga was arrested last week and booked under the PSA, another former president of the lawyers’ body Mian Abdul Qayoom was arrested last month in connection with the murder of Advocate Babar Qadri by terrorists in 2020.–(PTI)

Two army troopers have been injured during the ongoing encounter between government forces and militants in Zadan area of Kastigarh in Doda district. Quoting officials, local news agency, GNS reported that suspicious movement was observed by the army near LHS Zada. "During searches, contact was established with militants which triggered a gunfight," the official said. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V K Birdi said that on 8th Muharram, some mischievous elements took law in their own hands forcing the police act against them. “Our prime motive has been to facilitate all the Muharram processions.
