Kashmir’s forest cover shrinking rapidly: Report

REGIONAL
Kashmir has lost 40.61 square kilometers of forest cover in just two years, a decline largely driven by infrastructure and development projects, according to the latest Forest Survey of India (FSI) report. Jammu and Kashmir’s forest cover stood at 21,346.39 square kilometers in 2023, down from 21,387 square kilometers in 2021. Over the past decade, 60-70% of deforested land has been used for roads, military infrastructure, and tourism-related construction. Tourist hotspots like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg have seen increasing encroachment, with official approvals often enabling construction. Gulmarg alone lost 727 hectares of forest to 198 projects, resulting in the felling of nearly 1,850 trees. In Jammu, more than 21,000 trees were sanctioned for removal, with 8,150 already ...

Kashmir’s fragile future: Water shortages, contaminated springs, and the collapse of agriculture

WRITE-UPS
Danishwar Hameed On a cold January morning, Ghulam Mohammed Kumhar sits outside his small house in Redwani, watching the sky. A potter by trade, he once believed the land would be his salvation. In 2018, he sold his ancestral home and bought a patch of farmland. The first year was promising, but since then, nature has turned against him. "Every year brings new hope, but now it feels like even the land is not supporting us," Kumhar says, his voice laced with regret. "For the past two years, either it doesn’t snow at all, or when it does, it causes damage." Farmers across Kashmir share his anxiety. The once-predictable cycle of snowfall and rain has been disrupted. The absence of consistent snowfall during Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period, has left them staring...

’20 Crore Muslims being targetted’: Jammu activists accuse BJP of targeting Muslims through Waqf Amendment Bill

Socio-political activists in Jammu have strongly criticized the BJP-led Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for rejecting all 44 amendments proposed by opposition MPs to the Waqf Amendment Bill. They described the move as "a war against Indian Muslims" and accused the JPC of adopting an "undemocratic and dictatorial approach." At a press conference in Jammu, Shahid Saleem, chairman of the United Peace Alliance (UPA), claimed the amendments were rejected to facilitate the takeover of Waqf properties dedicated by Muslims for community welfare. "Muslims in India are already facing systematic discrimination, reducing them to second-class citizens," he alleged. Other speakers argued that the decision undermines Article 26 of the Indian Constitution, which grants religious groups the...
