Police on Sunday said that it have arrested a man for mercilessly beating his two minor children, aged five and three years, in the Panchari area of District Udhampur. In a handout to GNS, the police said that the incident came to light after a disturbing video went viral on social media, showing Sudesh Kumar S/O Late Sh. Parkash Chand R/O Naagni Chulna brutally assaulting his children. The police spokesman further said that upon becoming aware of the viral video, a team of Police Station Panchari was promptly deployed to investigate the matter. The accused Sudesh Kumar, was detained for questioning, and the children were immediately rescued from his custody, he said. Soldier injured in Sopore encounter succumbs, ops on

The soldier, who was injured in the encounter between militants and security forces in Gujjarpati area of Zaloora in Sopore, succumbed to his injuries, officials said. The encounter broke out in the area late last evening. An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the operation was halted last night due to darkness. "With the first light of the day, fresh firing resumed. In the ensuing encounter a soldier was injured and was evacuated to a hospital." He said that the injured jawan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. On Sunday joint teams of Army, CRPF and police cordoned off the Gujjarpati area during which a hideout was busted. "During the searches, the security forces' team was fired upon, leading to an encounter."—(KNO)

Kashmiri shawl seller assaulted, robbed in Punjab’s Kapurthala

A Kashmiri shawl seller was reportedly assaulted and robbed by three men on a motorcycle in the Sultanpur area of Kapurthala, Punjab, on Saturday, January 19. According to the police, Mohammad Shafi, who travels to Punjab annually for three months to sell shawls, was attacked in the Shahpur Andreta village while en route to make a sale. The assailants, who were masked, beat Shafi and stole Rs 12,000 in cash along with shawls valued at Rs 35,000. Following the attack, Shafi was hospitalized at Sultanpur Lodhi for treatment. One of the suspects, Raj Karan, has been arrested, and the motorcycle used in the crime was seized. Authorities are working to apprehend the remaining two assailants.

Reliable sources told news agency JKNS that the army jawan was critically injured during an ongoing operation that began yesterday when terrorists opened fire on a search party of security forces. "As the troops moved closer to the suspected hideout, they came under heavy fire, which was retaliated effectively," the officer said, adding that two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped in the area.
