A 50-year-old man named Azgar Molla from Phulbari was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred amid a surge in mob lynching cases driven by rumors. Molla’s body was found just 500 meters from the Bhangar police station, under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police.
Initially, bystanders mistook Molla for being intoxicated, but he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The local community had organized a night watch after a recent theft in Bhangar Bazar, and the lynching reportedly took place around 4:30 am.
Witnesses claim that no one intervened to help Molla during the attack.
The police have sent Molla’s body for a postmortem and launched an investigation, although no formal complaints have been received.
Joy Prakash Majumdar, a leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), attributed the incident to delays in the legislative process.
He noted that the government had drafted a law against mob lynching, which was sent to Raj Bhavan for approval when Jagdeep Dhankhar was Governor.
However, the Bill remains pending with the current Governor, C V Ananda Bose.
