827 OGWs arrested in 2024 in Jammu Kashmir: Police

The Jammu Kashmir Police have reported significant progress in maintaining security and curbing crime in the Jammu zone during 2024.

According to a statement released by officials, 14 foreign militants were killed this year, and 13 militant modules were dismantled across regions including Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur, Reasi, Doda, and Kathua.

The crackdown on overground workers (OGWs) saw a sharp increase, with 827 individuals booked in 2024 compared to 282 the previous year. Additionally, 180 people were detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), up from 168 in 2023.

General crime rates also declined significantly, with the total number of registered cases falling from 15,774 in 2023 to 13,163 in 2024. Cases of property theft, excluding motor vehicle thefts, dropped from 1,321 in 2023 to 944 in 2024, with stolen property valued at Rs. 14.18 crore. Motor vehicle theft cases also decreased, with a recovery rate of 47.48%.

Similarly, incidents of bovine smuggling saw a substantial decline from 2,600 cases in 2023 to 1,770 in 2024.

In the fight against drug abuse, the police registered 476 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Major seizures included 9.99 kg of heroin from the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera and 33.05 kg of heroin from the Jammu bus stand.

Property worth significant amounts was confiscated in NDPS-related cases, with nine seizures confirmed by the competent authority under SAFEMA. Furthermore, a new Drug De-addiction Centre was inaugurated in Jammu, offering comprehensive rehabilitation services.

On the cybercrime front, 67 police personnel received specialized training in handling cyber offenses.
