‘Do not troll us’: Govt. Degree College Baramulla issues ‘final warning’ to social media users

Govt. Degree College Baramulla has issued a final warning against individuals operating unauthorized social media pages that allegedly engage in trolling, defamation, and spreading derogatory content targeting the institution’s staff and students.

In a public notice released by the college principal, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Shafi Lone, it was stated that despite previous warnings, certain pages continue to malign the institution.

The college has sought intervention from J&K Cyber Police, which has identified individuals responsible, including their mobile numbers, email addresses, and residential addresses.

“This notice serves as a final warning to all such individuals. You are hereby directed to immediately remove all such pages, posts, and related content within the next 24 hours,” the circular read.

The college has also warned of strict legal action under Sections 66A-67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Sections 500 and 505 of the IPC, if compliance is not met. “Failure to comply shall result in a request to J&K Cyber Police to apprehend the individuals involved and initiate necessary legal proceedings,” the notice stated.

Additionally, the administration has cautioned students that engaging in such activities could result in severe academic consequences, including the cancellation of admission.

“Strict administrative action, including the cancellation of admission, will be taken against any student involved in such activities,” the notice warned.

The college emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward any attempts to malign its reputation. “The college remains firm in maintaining its integrity and shall not tolerate any attempts to malign its reputation,” the notice concluded.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms for defamatory and misleading content, prompting institutions to take a stronger stance against online misconduct.

Pertinently, a video of the college posted by a few Facebook users invited to the event has gone viral on social media.

The video shows teachers conducting vocational training, which has been ridiculed by social media users.

The content of the video has sparked widespread criticism, with users mocking the  activities and the teachers involved.

This incident has further contributed to the college’s decision to take a stronger stance against social media trolling and defamatory content.
