The Kangan area of Ganderbal has been grappling with an ongoing garbage collection crisis, leaving residents and business owners in distress. For the past month, the waste collection vehicles have been conspicuously absent, leading to a mounting pile-up of garbage across various neighborhoods, including Prang, Kangan, and Kijpora.
Despite locals paying a regular fee for waste collection, the failure of authorities to provide the service has caused significant environmental and health concerns.
“This negligence has turned our community into an eyesore,” said a frustrated local from Kangan. “Not only is it unsightly, but it’s also attracting pests and creating a serious health hazard for us.”
Hotel owners in the region are also feeling the negative impact, as the growing piles of garbage have started to affect their business image, especially with tourists beginning to take notice.
“Our customers are commenting on the trash scattered around. It’s ruining the reputation we’ve worked so hard to build,” shared a hotel owner in Kangan. “We urge the authorities to resolve this issue before it affects us further.”
In addition to the uncollected waste, Kangan Block had seen the construction of six waste segregation sheds, yet none of them are functioning. Although initially seen as a positive initiative, the sheds have become dumping grounds. The lack of proper management has led to foul smells and a surge in stray animals, exacerbating the health risks for local residents.
“We hoped these sheds would help, but they’ve become a problem of their own,” a local resident noted. “They’re just attracting more waste, and the smell is unbearable.”
With no sign of resolution, the locals are now calling for urgent intervention from the authorities.
They have appealed to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ACD) and the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal to address the ongoing issue of waste management.
