Earthquake tremors felt in Kashmir

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Saturday, with tremors felt across parts of the Kashmir valley, including Ganderbal and Srinagar.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake occurred at 06:47:55.5 UTC (12:17 PM IST), with its epicenter located at 71.38°E, 36.13°N and a depth of 86 km.

Locals from Ganderbal and Srinagar confirmed to The Kashmiriyat that at around 12:20 PM, they experienced strong tremors that shook the ground noticeably, sending people outdoors in panic.

There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, the tremors sparked concern among residents, especially given the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

More details are awaited.
