United in grief, politicians from Jammu Kashmir demand end to harassment of Kashmiris elsewhereIn a rare show of unity, political parties across the spectrum in Jammu Kashmir came together in Srinagar on Thursday to unanimously condemn the “heinous, inhumane attack” on civilians in Pahalgam on April 22. The meeting, convened in the spirit of collective grief and solidarity, also issued a strong appeal to all Indian states and union territories to ensure the safety and dignity of Kashmiris living outside the region.
“We unequivocally condemn in the strongest possible terms the barbaric attack in Pahalgam that killed innocent civilians,” the resolution stated, calling it a “direct assault on the values of Kashmiriyat and the idea of India.”
The meeting paid tribute to Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local man who was martyred while attempting to save tourists during the attack. “His valour and selflessness shall forever remain an inspiration to all. He is a true face of Kashmiriyat and Kashmir hospitality,” the resolution noted.
Beyond mourning and condemnation, the resolution highlighted growing concerns about the safety of Kashmiris, especially students and workers residing in other parts of the country. “We humbly and earnestly appeal to the governments of all States and Union Territories… to protect the Kashmiri students and citizens who find themselves far from home,” the statement read.
A senior political leader present at the meeting remarked, “Our message is clear—Kashmiris should not be made scapegoats in the wake of any tragedy. We must ensure their protection wherever they are.”
Participants also lauded the spontaneous peaceful protests held across the Valley and emphasized the importance of communal harmony and constitutional values. “This is a test for our national conscience,” said a civil society representative. “Standing with the victims means standing with every Kashmiri who fears reprisal.”
The resolution concluded with a call to political parties, media, and civil society to reject provocations, uphold peace, and work together for the prosperity of the region.
