Kashmiri female student harassed at Jamia, SFI demands immediate action

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Jamia Millia Islamia Unit has strongly condemned a sexual harassment incident that occurred on campus on April 27, 2025, involving a Kashmiri female student.

The harassment took place between 9:30 PM and 9:45 PM at entrance gate no. 8, where the student was assaulted in full view of campus security personnel, who shamefully failed to intervene.

A video of the confrontation, shared exclusively with The Kashmiriyat, shows the survivor in distress, visibly shouting and recounting the traumatic event.

The student is heard saying, “He touched me on my chest and then tried to run away.”

As she speaks, her voice filled with frustration and anger, she demands that the accused be held accountable for his actions.

The footage also captures her pointing out the inaction of the security staff, who not only allowed the perpetrator to escape but also failed to provide any assistance during the attack.

In a statement released by SFI, the student body expressed outrage over the failure of campus security to act, highlighting the systemic negligence in protecting students, particularly marginalized women from minority communities.

“This incident is not just an isolated act of violence but a glaring example of systemic neglect,” SFI said. “While students are regularly stopped and questioned for ID checks, the security staff turned a blind eye to an actual crime unfolding right before them.”

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of students on campus, as the survivor was left traumatized by the attack, and the administration’s inaction only deepened the sense of insecurity. “The survivor was left to face the trauma alone, while the administration’s silence sends a dangerous message that such violations will be tolerated,” SFI stated.

The organization has demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident and called for strict accountability for the administration and security personnel involved in neglecting their duty.

SFI also emphasized the need for concrete security reforms, including gender-sensitive training for security staff, the installation of functional surveillance systems, and the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment.

“Safety is not a privilege; it is a basic right,” SFI asserted. “We stand in unwavering solidarity with the survivor and will not allow this incident to be swept under the rug. If the administration continues to remain silent, we will escalate our protests through all necessary means until our demands are met.”

SFI Jamia Millia Islamia Unit has pledged to continue their fight to ensure a safe and secure campus environment for all students, particularly those from marginalized communities.

The organization has called on the university administration to take immediate action to prevent such incidents from recurring and to ensure that Jamia becomes a safe space for all its students.
