Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the armed forces complete operational freedom to determine the timing, targets, and strategy in responding to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu Kashmir, that killed 26 people, including several tourists, on April 22.
Chairing a high-level security meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s resolve to “crush terrorism” and stated that those responsible for the attack — including their handlers and supporters across the border — would face retribution “beyond their imagination.”
The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the chiefs of the three armed forces, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.
According to sources cited by PTI, Modi emphasized full confidence in the military’s professionalism, saying they have the liberty to choose the response strategy without political constraints.
The government has already taken initial retaliatory steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, signaling a hardened stance in the wake of the attack.
Earlier in the day, a separate meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan brought together heads of paramilitary forces and senior intelligence officials, though the details of that session remain undisclosed.
The Pahalgam attack, which has triggered nationwide outrage, continues to dominate headlines, with survivors recounting harrowing moments and political leaders across the spectrum condemning the violence.
