A man drowned in the Jhelum river at Batengoo in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday afternoon while performing Wudu (ablution), locals told The Kashmiriyat.

They said the man slipped into the river and was pulled out by bystanders, who rushed him to GMC Anantnag, where doctors declared him brought dead.

An official from the hospital confirmed to The Kashmiriyat that the man had no signs of life when brought in. “All attempts at resuscitation failed,” the official said.

The deceased, a daily wager with the Flood and Irrigation Department, is survived by his wife and four young daughters.

Locals mourned the tragic loss, calling him a kind and hardworking man. “He would often be seen working tirelessly along the riverbanks. This is a huge loss to his family and the community,” one neighbour said.

Police officials said a team was rushed to the spot, and medico-legal formalities are being completed. “An investigation has been launched into the incident,” said a police officer from Anantnag.
