
Kashmir’s young athletes are carving their names in India’s water sports arena, with three paddlers from the Valley winning medals at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 and other national-level competitions.
Mohsin Ali, son of Fida Hussain from Nehru Park Kand Mohalla, Srinagar, has emerged as one of Kashmir’s most decorated kayaking and canoeing players. He holds a total of 14 national medals, including 3 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze.
At the Khelo India 2025 event, he clinched the gold medal, adding to his bronze medal win at the National Games 2025.
Mohammed Hussain brought pride to Kashmir by winning a silver medal in the C2 category at the Khelo India 2025 festival.
Another Kashmiri paddler, Sajad Hussain Latoo, also secured a silver medal at the festival. He has built a consistent track record over the years, bagging 1st position at the Sub-Junior Nationals, 2nd at the Junior Nationals, 3rd at the Senior Nationals in Bhopal, and 4th at the Senior Nationals in Uttarakhand. He also secured 5th rank at the National Games.
The achievements drew the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally called Mohsin Ali to congratulate him. The Prime Minister also mentioned him in his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat.
Sharing his excitement, Mohsin said, “It was like a dream. When the call came, I was surprised. The Prime Minister congratulated me, encouraged me to keep moving forward, and even asked about the support and facilities I received. It was a proud moment for me.”
He added, “I am happy that for the first time, this event was hosted in Kashmir. We are grateful to the Government of India for providing us this platform. After speaking with the Prime Minister, my motivation has grown even stronger. My dream now is to win an Olympic medal for the country.”
With their remarkable performances, all three athletes have not only brought pride to Jammu Kashmir but also raised hopes for bigger achievements at the international stage
