‘They’re suffering immensely’: Omar Abdullah led government seeks hike in monthly assistance for Kashmiri Pandits

Jammu Kashmir government has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking an increase in monthly relief assistance for Kashmiri and Jammu migrants.

Migrants under the relief category currently receive free ration — 9 kg of rice and 2 kg of atta per person, and 1 kg of sugar per family — along with a cash assistance of Rs 3,250 per person per month, capped at Rs 13,000 per family.

“The enhancement of relief assistance is within the domain of the Ministry of Home Affairs. A proposal for the same has already been submitted for consideration,” the government said in a written reply during the ongoing Assembly session.

On pending migrant registration cases, officials said that of the 1,263 provisionally registered cases, 351 have been cleared while 658 were recommended for cancellation based on CID and District Magistrate reports.

“Taking a sympathetic view, the government has decided to give those individuals a chance to explain their case before cancellation,” the reply added.

The government also informed that a Detailed Project Report worth Rs 8,490.15 lakh has been prepared for repair and renovation works at Jagti and Nagrota migrant townships.

Work on 6,000 new residential units for Prime Minister’s Package employees is underway, with 3,736 flats completed so far.

The remaining units are expected to be finished within the stipulated timeframe, officials said.

The government further added that compassionate appointments for the next of kin of PM Package employees who died in service have been formally included under the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme, 2022.
