India, in the recent Press Freedom index has dropped down to number 142nd out of 180 countries in the annual Reporters Without Borders analysis, which is increasingly due to the escalating attacks on Journalists throughout India.
Fahad Shah, a Prominent Kashmiri Journalist was in connection with a news story published on his weekly magazine, The Kashmir walla, summoned to their office, by the Cyber wing of Jammu Kashmir Police in Srinagar, on Wednesday.
At Around 2:45pm in the day, Peerzada Fahad Shah went inside the Cyber Police station, where he was questioned by the officials for hours together, but has now be asked to go. Social media is aghast over the summoning of Fahad, twitter and Facebook is largely campaigning for the protection of Journalists, condemning the harassment of Fahad Shah.
He, according to, his colleagues, was summoned regarding a video story of yesterday’s encounter which was widely shared over social media, including facebook, twitter and other platforms. In the video, Fahad had reported that 15 houses were damaged during the encounter, Also women alleged that the Police had barged inside the households and looted their property.
Known for his distinctive Journalism and fearless factual reportage on The Kashmir walla and other international publications, Fahad in the past too has been questioned by the officials, however that has not deterred his journalistic line
In Kashmir, journalists have been harassed in the past too, Qazi Shibli, the editor of The Kashmiriyat was released recently after nearly nine months of detention. Gowhar Geelani, Masarat Zehra, were booked under UAPA, while as many journalists including Kamran Yusuf, Suhail Dar were booked under frivolous charges.
Aasif Sultan, a journalist has been detained since 2018 and continues to remain incarcerated in a Srinagar Jail, in other parts of Kashmir, Journalists have been harassed, thrashed on the roads, threatened and abused while and for performing their professional duties.

India in general is witnessing heightened incidents of violence against Jounalists. Prominent journalist, Gauri Lankesh was murdered on a busy street. A report published on the Wire states that there have been at least 200 cases of attacks on Journalist since the coming of BJP into power in 2014 till 2019, 40 Journalists have been killed, 21 of these murders have been related to their journalistic activities.
