In her interview, she had alleged that, a man named Rafiq Ahmed Dundoo had raped her after holding her captive. She also alleged that she he forced her to wear Muslim attire, Rafiq however has said all the allegations are baseless.

Questioning her story, Dundoo asked why did not Careman say anything to anyone during her treks and sightseeing sessions. “She was trekking daily for around 11 to 12 days, why didn’t she tell anyone? The allegations are baseless. How can a person be in captivity for 2 months in a houseboat at peak season of the year and with the police station so close by.”

Dundoo said that the close proximity of the houseboats makes it impractical to hold someone against his/her will.

He claims that Carmen has resurfaced after 16 years to gain publicity for herself and controversy for her book to sell. “She is publishing a book and for its publicity is tarnishing my name.”

According to Rafiq, she had been angry when he had beaten a Nepali helper, with whom she had been very close. “They used to roam around, and were very close. I was worried that something might happen and I, being the houseboat owner will be answerable so I beat the boy and this is what triggered her.”

Carmen has alleged in her book that her passport and documents were with Rafiq. “If her passport was with me, how did she reach Australia?”

The FIR had been registered some weeks after she left and Rafiq was put in police custody for 12 days in Ram Munshi Bagh police Station, after which he was bailed out.

Rafiq said that this case has humiliated him and his whole family, “I was beaten and humiliated, I request her to please stop playing with my life, don’t make me and my family suffer.”

Meanwhile the lawyer of Dundoo has said that Careman had in 2004 refused being medically examined whether she had been raped or not. (With Inputs from Kashmir Monitor)
