North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un announced an emergency and a lockdown in the border town of Kaesong, after a person suspected of being coronavirus positive returned from South Korea, North’s KCNA reported on Sunday.
Kim Jong Un declared an emergency meeting in response to a “critical situation in which the vicious virus could be said to have entered the country,” KCNA reported.

“An emergency event happened in Kaesong City where a runaway who went to the south three years ago, a person who is suspected to have been infected with the vicious virus returned on July 19 after illegally crossing the demarcation line,” KCNA stated.
Although KCNA has not confirmed if the suspected person has been tested, it said an “uncertain result was made from several medical check-ups of the secretion of that person’s upper respiratory organ and blood,” prompting officials to quarantine the person and investigate anyone he may have been in contact with.
If the person is confirmed coronavirus positive, it would be the first case officially admitted and reported by North Korea.
Choo Jae-woo, professor at Kyung Hee University, South Korea, said “It’s an ice-breaking moment for North Korea to admit a case”.
“It could be reaching out to the world for help. Perhaps for humanitarian assistance,” he added.
Currently, North Korea is under international sanctions over its nuclear program which has resulted in economic pressure.
Russia and other countries have supplied North Korea with thousands of coronavirus testing kits.
North Korea had imposed strict border closures and thousands of people in the country had also undergone quarantine periods as a precautionary measure to prevent a coronavirus outbreak but restrictions had recently been eased.
