For the third time since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu Kashmir, the United Nations Security Council on request of Pakistan agreed to discuss Kashmir.
The meeting was held virtually behind the closed doors, on 6th August yesterday, but there was no statement released neither were any sort of reactions witnessed.
However, a statement issued from the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said, “Holding the meeting signified Jammu and Kashmir is an international dispute firmly on the agenda of the Security Council and has nullified, yet another time, the Indian self-serving claim that it is an internal matter.’”
As per the statement of Mr. Qureshi remarks by Pakistan’s U.N. Mission have been circulated that the international community should exercise its moral, legal, and political authority to call out India to reverse the tide.
He also requested the Indian government to reverse its unilateral actions, stop human rights violations, and continue border cease-fire. Mr. Qureshi also requested to the uplift of restrictions on communications, movement of people, peaceful assembly, and immediate release of the Kashmir’s leaders.
Mr. Qureshi expressed his heartfelt appreciation to those 15 Security Council members who agreed to attend this discussion and especially thanked China for their unwavering support for organizing this meeting.
Mr. Qureshi said India made several attempts to prevent this discussion in order to minimize the essence and importance of this meeting but they still went ahead and conducted it successfully.
After this meeting, India’s new U.N. Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti tweeted: “Another attempt by Pakistan fails! In today’s meeting of the UN Security Council which was closed, informal, not recorded, and without any outcome, almost all countries underlined that J-K (Jammu and Kashmir) was a bilateral issue & did not deserve time and attention of Council.”
