Banjeet Kaur, a resident of Udhampur in Jammu broke the social barrier and became an auto driver to support her family after her father lost his job, due to Covid – 19 pandemic.
According to a video report by Take One Digital Media, Banajeet said, “I was always interested in driving, I loved to drive. But I could never make good use of it. Also, the conservative nature of my family did not allow me to pursue anything”.
“After Covid – 19, the dynamics changed. My father lost his job and I took upon myself to look after my family and support them financially. I got my license in 2017. I got my license and when I went to the RTO office for filing documents, all the staff members and supervisors clapped for me. They told me that I was very clean and precise with my driving”, said Banjeet.
Banjeet spoke on the patriarchal and systematic pressure that girls face and said that girls are considered weak, they are never allowed to follow their dreams and do what they actually intent to follow. People are changing, girls from Jammu Kashmir are finally getting the acknowledgement and support they deserve.
“Until I land a job, I plan on supporting my family. We are 6 daughters and I have no brother. I want someone from my family to secure a government post or a minimum wage that will ensure our financial security”, said Banjeet.
